Anyone who has paid attention over the last few weeks has certainly seen pictures or videos of federal “civil servants” protesting losing their jobs.
Were government jobs ever supposed to be “for life”? Were the people of America supposed to pay the salaries, benefits and retirement plans of their fellow citizens? Was landing a government job supposed to insure that a person never be laid off, scrutinized, or fired?
I would say no to all of the above.
I am of the belief that Civil Service was always intended to be a sacrifice by someone who truly wanted to make government work (not that that is even possible) to the best of their ability. Civil Service was, in my opinion, never supposed to be a life-long career move.
Many of us in the real world have been laid off, fired, downsized, reviewed, and even demoted. I can count at least 5 times in my life where my employment ended. One time because of my own mistake, the others because of companies reorganizing, closing, or downsizing.
Many of us have had to start over several times in our life yet, somehow, we landed on our feet. Most of us did not start protest marches when the companies we were dedicated to changed direction and we ended up on the receiving end of a pink slip. We picked up our lives and moved on. Some of us have had to move to places we did not necessarily want to live to stay employed. Some of us have had to sell everything we own and/or lose everything we had accumulated. A portion of us have had to work 2 or 3 jobs to pay the bills.
Government employees should never be immune to the same issues that face the very people that provide the tax dollars that funds their salaries, benefits, and retirement packages.
Many of my readers know I hold no love for giant governments or those “in charge” at the top. I do not care which party is installed at the top. Each of these parties has some serious problems. The truth is, the American government is the biggest in world history and changes must be made. The country is 36 odd *trillion* dollars in debt, an amount that does not include the unfunded liabilities like Medicare, Social Security, etc. I do not believe I am alone in thinking it may be a good idea to downsize the bloated government payroll which has ballooned to a staggering 23.59 million dollars a month. All that money is being spent to employ people who, in many cases, only serve to reduce the amount of liberty we have, and impose tyrannical rules, laws, and regulations on the very people who earn the money that pays their salaries!
I feel bad for those who are experiencing downsizing and being forced into making difficult decisions (to an extent), but I do not feel bad for any of those government employees who, without gratitude for the days, months, or years they’ve been employed by our hard-earned tax dollars, are out protesting their positions being cut. Grow up, man up, and move on. Just like the rest of us.
Actually, no employee should be subject to layoffs unless there's a real reason for it.
In private industry, they regularly do layoffs while giving executives bonuses.
Let's raise the standard for everyone instead of bitch about unions and civil service etc.
The wealthy, including those that make big money on government contracts, like Musk, should be the ones to take a hit.
Good conversation here, as usual...
I think the arguments made here are good, but they are being made within the vacuum of corporate rules. the people have no voice. war, corporate farming, culling animals for fake diseases, taxes on our wages... NO voice. This ain't no democracy, folks. So saith the dog.
And PS: When people can be sent into oblivion simply by losing their job, when people can be manipulated with the THREAT of losing their jobs, something is broken...
