You hit on a very important point. Things are falling apart, and they can't let people notice. Hence the increase in hysteria and distractions. If everything was business as usual, they'd be quiet and just let the wheels turn. They're afraid.

Most American people of our generation got their ethics, morals and principles from Christianity regardless of denomination as they were/are all similar. When I was a kid, I didn't know of anyone who did not go to some church. Today, I'm guessing/remembering what I have read, about half of Americans attend church or claim an association with a particular Christian organization. As America fills with non-Christians and others stop believing in God, there will grow a need for a common set of ethics, morals and principles that apply to all humans if we want to live together in peace and maybe even advance the species, whatever that means. If there is a "falling apart" happening, it is likely due to the high speed at which change is being pushed and not that the changes don't have the long-term inertia. Something will fill the void left by millions abandoning traditional religion.
