Hey Rob, this was very well timed. I have just planted 30 potato tubers is old fertiliser bags. Its the first time I have grown potatoes since we gave up our allotment 10 years ago (Something I have regretted). I now have a small plot left to fill up (about 6ft square) and am stuggleIng to decide what to put in a small area. That book you suggest sounds good. I might make a purchase. 🍻

Excellent. I love growing potatoes. Are your fertilizer bags plastic? If they are, be sure to put a lot of holes in the bags to make sure they don't get water logged. Yes, that book is great. It was given to me as a gift years ago and I reference it every year. Thanks for chiming in and sharing your project. :)

They are indeed plastic, and well holed 😁. Ive not do e them in bags before so a bit of an experiment. The wife had a disagreement on how much earth to use in each bag. I let her win that one. Time will tell 🤣

The way you do that Rob D... Roll down the bags and put just a bit of soil in the bottom and then put put your potato in. Then put just a bit more dirt over the potato. When the potato sprouts get about 6" tall, add more dirt within a couple inches of the top of the sprout and then wait until it grows another 6" (unrolling the bag as you go). Do that at least twice and then let the potatoes grow! I hope this all makes sense. Make sure you are using nice fluffy soil for this as well. Make sure the soil drains good. You can use straw to do this also. If you are unclear on what I'm saying here, feel free to message back. :)

You have just exactly described what we have done Rob. And that was all my wifes idea. I would have put more earth at the botom, but i'd trust you over my ideas.

Great post! The square foot garden website looks very helpful for beginners like me. All of my seeds are already in the ground, but I will be coming back to this next season to try to approach things a bit more rigorously. I've been going off of intuition for a while, but it's not enough anymore.

Sometimes we need a bit more info for sure. We do tend to overthink growing vegetables at times, but also having more info and pictures can assist people who are a bit inexperienced. I forget that things that I consider very easy are because of my experience. I've been through many of the struggles others have when trying to grow vegetables but many of those struggles were decades ago. I believe that book will be very beneficial to you.

I want to try gardening, a bit, INSIDE... Any tips on that?

I simply don't have much land to use, and what I do have is pretty much clay. I can't afford to buy ANYTHING to mitigate that, but I do have some pots and dirt I bought for such, and flowers...

Well, I know next to NOTHING about growing things, AND my houseplants seem to be suffering from being irradiated... like me. I live very close to someone with a GIANT ham radio antenna array, and it's cooking him, me, and everything else. PLUS the 5G thing on the telephone pole, PLUS the "smart" meter on my little house. If I had any money, I'd MOVE-- maybe sometime soon?

I am VERY interested in the Tesla discovery of free energy... It's a reality that we could all enjoy... no need for wars, paying for heat, cooling, gas, etc etc etc

So I just want to TALK about it until it gets bigger, and maybe, maybe, before I leave this life, I'll see it come to fruition and the New Age can begin. I'm not nuts, I'm not on drugs!

Those EMF waves definitely affect growing things and insects. Especially if the plants and insects are bathed in it. I'd start with lettuce, spinach and/or radishes. They do fine in pots. If you stay where you are and want to fix your clay soil, there's ways to do that, though it takes time. If you choose to fix up your clay soil you would need to start composting and gather leaves and things to mix in with the soil. It takes a few years to get it where it will grow things successfully, but it's worth it! I definitely recommend that book "square foot gardening". It has a lot of basic things in it, but also has things for the advanced grower as well. I used to grow in pots in places where i only had a balcony. Where there's a will, there's a way! :)

Thanks, Rob D!

I do think, though, at the earliest opportunity, I'll be off to live somewhere else.

Cheers. ^_^

I know that's been on your list for a few years now. It sounds like you need to get out of there for your sanity. :)
