Thanks Rosemary. I was pleased with the way things turned out. But... as anyone who gardens knows, luck plays a bit of a roll as well. We had some rain this year which really helped and a cooler spring which really helped with the cool weather crops (like cabbage). Thanks so much for being here. :)

Haha. Trial and error my friend. Trial and error. I've had years where I was lucky to get a darn potato. Keep trying and remember, variety is one of the keys. You may have a season with lots of one thing and nothing of something else. I try to grow a bit of everything and make sure that everything I plant is something that I will eat, even if it's not something I particularly like. If that makes sense.

I know you can! My cherry tomato plant (I just had one) was over 7 feet tall this year and I had so many cherry tomatoes I couldn't keep up. Unfortunately, I took it out yesterday because it's going to freeze here soon. :( I'm sure a happy dance is in your future. :)

Thanks for this reminder. I live right by highway one now, so only grow ornamentals, but have fond memories of growing Zapotec green corn, branching sunflower and pink banana squash together when we were renting with a large grass lawn over an antiquated septic system. Just covered it with cardboard and some free hose nailed in as dripper wherever I dug through the turf to plant. Didn't even need fertilizer. Onions too, not over the septic though. Those carbon tomatoes look like Cherokee Purple heritage lineage. The best. Grew bags of those in New England.

Sounds like you had some great experiences with growing food Stephen. Don't forget that there are some vegetables that are beautiful plants as well. Certain types of kale and cabbage are beautiful (if you like them) and can enhance your ornamental garden and give you a bit of food in the process. Appreciate you taking the time to check out my post. :)
